Vision
The Journal of Ageing in the Global South (JAGS) aspires to be the leading international platform advancing research, dialogue, and policy innovation on ageing in low- and middle-income countries. We envision a future where the rights, well-being, active participation and independent living of older adults are recognised as central to social, economic and cultural vitality. By amplifying perspectives from the Global South, JAGS seeks to reshape global narratives on ageing and to highlight opportunities rather than burdens.
Mission
JAGS is committed to publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and theoretical contributions that examine the social, cultural, economic, political, and psychological dimensions of ageing. With a particular emphasis on active and healthy ageing, positive paradigms of older persons, and their overall well-being, the journal promotes interdisciplinary approaches that draw on economics, demography, sociology, public health, social policy, and related fields. Our mission is to foster scholarly discourse that informs evidence-based policies, strengthens practice, and inspires innovative solutions for ageing societies in the Global South.
Why JAGS?
Countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America are ageing faster and earlier than high-income nations, often without the wealth or infrastructure that supported demographic transitions in the North. This creates unique challenges—strains on pensions, health systems, and care structures—but also immense opportunities. Older adults are not only recipients of support but also contributors through work, caregiving, entrepreneurship, and intergenerational solidarity.
By publishing locally grounded research and comparative perspectives, JAGS bridges scholarship and practice. We aim to influence social policy, expand international understanding, and promote inclusive approaches that treat ageing as an opportunity for creativity, resilience, and contribution. Through rigorous peer review and open access, JAGS ensures that knowledge generated in and about the Global South reaches global audiences, strengthening the foundations for active and healthy ageing worldwide.
Aims and Objectives
The primary aim of JAGS is to advance knowledge and understanding of ageing processes and their societal impacts through rigorous scholarly discourse. The journal seeks to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and promote innovative research that informs policy, practice, and future research in the social sciences concerning ageing.
By offering an interdisciplinary platform (economics, demography, sociology, public health, social policy), the journal will highlight locally grounded research and policy solutions while amplifying voices from the Global South in the global conversation on aging. The journal will focus on:
- Demographic change and projections — fertility decline, longevity rise, shrinking labour forces.
- Social and economic implications — pensions, health and long-term care systems, intergenerational solidarity, productivity and labour-market adjustments.
- Policy innovations — inclusive social protection, active ageing, lifelong learning, migration, urban planning, and community care models.
- Comparative perspectives — lessons from both Global South experiences and North–South policy transfers.
- Opportunities — silver economy, healthy ageing, technology for care, and the role of older persons as contributors to society.
Scope
The Journal of Ageing in the Global South (JAGS) is a peer-reviewed, newly established annual publication by the University of Management and Technology (UMT), a leading university in Pakistan. As life expectancy increases, fertility rates decline, and working-age populations contract, low- and middle-income countries are experiencing a profound demographic transition earlier and at lower levels of wealth compared to high-income nations. This journal will serve as a dedicated platform to advance knowledge and policy dialogue on the opportunities and challenges of aging societies in the Global South.
Key Audience
The journal's key audience includes academic researchers, scholars, and students in social sciences, including sociology, psychology, anthropology, economics, and political science. It also targets policymakers, practitioners, social workers, and professionals working in ageing-related fields, healthcare, and social services. Additionally, the journal aims to reach international organizations, advocacy groups, and institutions interested in ageing, social inclusion, and policy development related to older populations worldwide.
