Analysis Analysis of Bylines in Climate Change Reporting in the Pakistani Newspapers
Abstract
Abstract Views: 0Each newspaper’s story contains a title; it is followed by the writers' or story developers’ credentials. Technically, in print media, mentioning the name and credentials of the writer is called ‘byline.’ Most of the time, it is thought that do bylines of the content of the newspaper matter. The literature suggests that credentials present in the bylines decide the credibility of the content. Though, there are a few studies found about bylines of news. The purpose of this study is to examine the types of bylines of climate change reporting in Pakistani newspapers. A longitudinal quantity content analysis of three highly circulated newspapers, i.e., Daily Dawn, Daily Jang, and Daily Kawish, was conducted through a systematic random sampling technique during five significant climate change events organized by the UNFCCC from 1992 to 2016. The findings show that most of the stories related to climate change are received through News Agencies. However, it was observed at the time of data collection that Daily Dawn had received an enormous amount of stories through International News Agency such as AFP. The ‘Byline’ comparison of climate change stories among Daily Dawn, Daily Jang, and Daily Kawish revealed a significant difference. It showed that there is no distinguish weight between the ‘Byline’ of climate change stories and events’ reporting. Therefore, it is suggested that in the future, studies should be conducted about other hard and soft news subjects to determine the bylines variations.
