Dr. Afzal is currently Chairperson of the Department of Life Sciences and Associate Professor of Virology and Immunology, University of Management and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan. He was previously a Postdoctoral fellow at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center, Lahore, Pakistan.
Afzal's research work encompasses epidemiology and the molecular pathogenesis of virus infections of importance to global health, particularly Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and influenza viruses, and embraces a broad range of molecular genetic, biochemical and cohort-based methods to explore the fundamental principles of virus spread and the human host-mediated control. One long-running topic of interest has been the parasitology of Cystic echinococcosis in the local population. He has published more than 103 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals and conferences. Before becoming Editor-in-Chief for BioScientific Review in 2019, he served as an Editor. He also serves as an Associate Editor for Scientific Inquiry and Review.
