Perspectives of Nigerian Youth on Netflix as Ubiquitous Force in Media Landscape

Netflix has been in existence for some time and a comparatively high preponderance of Nigerian youth are avid users probably due to their passion for the app which access and use through multiple devices is enhanced by the Internet connectivity. Those that frequently use Netflix do so for different reasons and purposes. Against this backdrop, this study interviewed youth Netflix users across Nigeria to find out their perspective on the new online platform that has expanded the media ecosystem. Using purposive sampling, in-depth interview conducted with twenty-one Netflix users indicate that the Internet presence and mobile apps are becoming more useful among youngsters. They use the Netflix application, essentially, to explore upcoming videos and for streaming different videos. The study concludes that basic requirements like the Internet access and knowledge about functionality of the media app are instrumental for one to use Netflix. Based on the results, the study recommends more investment in the Internet infrastructure in order to enable youth continue to explore and stream the new ways of obtaining entertainment content on Netflix that satisfies their relaxation needs.
