Investigating the Impact of Artificial Intelligence: Assisted Tools on English Language Acquisition among University-Level ESL Learners

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping L2 teaching and learning. This study aims to explore the impact of ChatGPT and other AI-based tools on ELL (adult learners) whose first language is not English in Pakistan. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 300 students. The researchers used various statistical analyses to assess the impact of the AI tools on students' learning outcomes. The results show that ChatGPT and other AI tools had a positive impact on students' English writing skills and their motivation to learn. No gender differences were detected, however, in writing skills development. However, students' speaking skills did not significantly improve when they used AI tools. The results indicate that AI can be used as an effective complement to writing development and the motivation of learners, but activities should be designed to support speaking specifically. Moreover, over-dependence on AI tools should be avoided. Rather, the use of AI resources should be combined with speaking activities and other pedagogical approaches to achieve more well-rounded and effective English language learning outcomes.
