Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the challenges and benefits associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the university libraries of Pakistan. Given the novelty of the phenomenon, this study opted a qualitative research approach, and interviews were conducted with 20 university librarians who were purposefully chosen. The findings indicate that the use of AI in libraries improves operations and services by minimizing human errors caused by the repetitive nature of routine tasks. The study identified several challenges encountered by university librarians, including financial issues, inadequate specialization in emerging technologies, and limited resources to adopt and use AI-based technologies. Such challenges may be addressed by equipping librarians with necessary knowledge and technical skills such as basic IT skills, understanding AI concepts, data analysis and management, knowledge of AI algorithms, and critical thinking. This research significantly contributes by identifying the precise technical and professional competencies necessary for effective AI integration in university libraries, which encompass fundamental IT skills, comprehension of AI concepts, data analysis and management, familiarity with AI algorithms, and critical thinking. This work presents empirical evidence from a developing-country viewpoint, offering novel insights for higher education administrators, politicians, and library professionals aiming to deploy AI-driven library services in Pakistan and analogous contexts.
